Course Overview

Each civil construction job is planned and organised from the construction plans and specifications.

There are a range of plans, drawings and specifications used in civil construction to show specific details for different applications.

Whilst you will receive your work instructions and specifications as part of a work plan or works program drawn up by your project manager or site supervisor you will still need to be able to read, interpret and check your work against drawings and specifications.

This course will take you through the types of plans and specifications, verifying amendments, converting scales and interpreting symbols and dimensions.

Course Outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Plan and prepare for read and interpret plans and job specifications
  • Recognise amendments
  • Recognise commonly used symbols and abbreviations
  • Locate and identify key features on site plan
  • Read and interpret job specifications

Upon successful completion of the course you will receive a Statement of Attainment.

    Course Duration

    This course is one day (8 hours).

    Entry Requirements

    All learners must be 16 years or older and will be required to provide photographic identification upon arriving for their course.

    As part of your course enrolment at Civil Train there is a requirement that you complete a short online quiz. This will assist Civil Train to understand your current levels of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN), to ensure you are at the appropriate level to successfully complete your selected training course. This is a one-time quiz and results will be saved to your learner file and referred to for all future enrolments.

    Language. Literacy and Numeracy skills required for this course include:

    • Using a range of communications techniques and equipment
    • Complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures
    • Carrying out basic calculations of heights, areas, volumes and grades
    • Interpreting features of plans and elevations including direction, scale, key, contours, symbols and abbreviations
    • Interpreting commonly used civil construction symbols and abbreviations
    • Application of scales in plan preparation and interpretation

    Please note: Civil Train only carries out assessments in English.  If English is your second language, you may engage a professional (accredited) and independent translator at your cost, for training purposes only.  However, you will be required to undertake the assessment in English without the aid of your translator.

    Delivery & Assessment

    This course is delivered and assessed face to face.
    There are theory and practical training and assessment components to the course.

    Public courses are scheduled frequently in Perth.
    This course can also be delivered regionally – please contact the office for regional locations and dates.
