Course Overview

This course equips operators with the skills to safely and efficiently plan, prepare, and execute excavator operations in civil construction. Participants will learn to interpret documentation, manage hazards, perform prestart checks, and operate machinery within safe limits. The course covers material handling, using attachments, and safely relocating the excavator, while emphasising the importance of housekeeping and proper documentation to maintain a compliant and safe work environment.

Course Outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

Plan and Prepare for Excavator Operations

  • Interpret and apply relevant excavator operation documentation.
  • Clarify and confirm work requirements.
  • Identify hazards, assess risks, and implement control measures.
  • Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Select suitable excavator equipment and attachments for the task.
  • Understand and follow emergency procedures for excavator operations.
  • Effectively coordinate and communicate activities with site personnel.

Operate Excavator According to Established Requirements

  • Perform prestart and start-up checks in accordance with workplace procedures.
  • Identify and address faults or defects within scope of responsibility.
  • Operate excavator safely, adapting to equipment capabilities and site conditions.
  • Monitor safety hazards and risks during operations.
  • Manage excavator performance using indicators and alarms.

Lift, Carry, and Place Materials

  • Assess load weight and ensure it is within safe operational limits.
  • Use lifting gear according to safe working load requirements.
  • Position and stabilise excavator for effective material handling.
  • Safely shift loads using proper signaling techniques.
  • Complete post-operation equipment inspections and secure machinery.

Select, Fit, and Use Attachments

  • Choose the correct attachment for the task.
  • Properly fit, test, and operate attachments.
  • Use attachments within design limits and workplace guidelines.
  • Remove, clean, and store attachments in accordance with workplace procedures.

Prepare and Relocate the Excavator

  • Prepare the excavator for safe relocation.
  • Safely move the excavator between work areas.

Conduct Housekeeping Activities

  • Clear and dispose of or recycle materials in line with workplace procedures.
  • Manage and report hazards to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Complete and file necessary documentation as per workplace requirements.

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a Statement of Attainment and Competency Card.

    Course Duration

    This course is four (4) days.

    Entry Requirements

    As part of your course enrolment at Civil Train there is a requirement that you complete a short online quiz. This will assist Civil Train to understand your current levels of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN), to ensure you are at the appropriate level to successfully complete your selected training course. This is a one-time quiz and results will be saved to your learner file and referred to for all future enrolments.

    Please note: Civil Train only carries out assessments in English.

    The applicant must be able to use the English language at a level that is appropriate for the safe use and operation of the particular class of equipment. As an example, the applicant must be able to read and comprehend hazard warning signs, load charts, data plates and any other safe operating requirement. The applicant must be able to communicate this information to the registered assessor.

    Delivery & Assessment

    This course is delivered face to face.

    There are theory and practical training and assessment components to the course that are online.
