Course Overview

This course is designed for operators to develop and refine their skills in safely and effectively using backhoe/loaders. Participants will learn to plan and prepare for operations by interpreting documentation, managing hazards, and coordinating with site personnel. The course covers operating the machinery, including performing prestart checks, handling and placing materials, and managing equipment performance. It also includes training on selecting and using attachments, relocating the equipment safely, and performing essential housekeeping tasks. This course ensures operators are proficient in backhoe/loader operations within civil construction environments.

Course Outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

Effective Planning and Preparation:

  • Interpret and apply backhoe/loader operations documentation and work instructions.
  • Identify hazards and environmental issues in line with workplace policies.
  • Select and use appropriate PPE, signage, and traffic management requirements.
  • Confirm equipment suitability and understand emergency procedures.
  • Communicate and coordinate planned activities with site personnel.

Proficient Machine Operation:

  • Perform prestart and start-up checks as per procedures.
  • Identify, address, or report faults and defects.
  • Operate the backhoe/loader effectively, adapting techniques to conditions.
  • Monitor and manage machine performance and safety during operations.

Efficient Material Handling:

  • Determine load weight and ensure it is within safe limits.
  • Use lifting gear correctly and position machinery for effective material handling.
  • Shift materials safely using appropriate signals.
  • Complete post-operation inspections and secure equipment properly.

Attachment Management:

  • Select and fit attachments according to task requirements and workplace procedures.
  • Test attachments for proper operation and use within design limits.
  • Remove, clean, and store attachments correctly.

Safe Relocation:

  • Prepare and relocate the backhoe/loader safely between work areas, following traffic management guidelines.

Effective Housekeeping:

  • Clear and dispose of or recycle materials as per procedures.
  • Manage and report hazards to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Complete and manage documentation in compliance with workplace practices.

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a Statement of Attainment and Competency Card.

    Course Duration

    This course is four (4) days.

    Entry Requirements

    As part of your course enrolment at Civil Train there is a requirement that you complete a short online quiz. This will assist Civil Train to understand your current levels of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN), to ensure you are at the appropriate level to successfully complete your selected training course. This is a one-time quiz and results will be saved to your learner file and referred to for all future enrolments.

    Please note: Civil Train only carries out assessments in English.

    The applicant must be able to use the English language at a level that is appropriate for the safe use and operation of the particular class of equipment. As an example, the applicant must be able to read and comprehend hazard warning signs, load charts, data plates and any other safe operating requirement. The applicant must be able to communicate this information to the registered assessor.

    Delivery & Assessment

    This course is delivered face to face.

    There are theory and practical training and assessment components to the course that are online.
