Confined Spaces

South Australia & Northern Territory

Are you working in an industry where you may need to work in a confined space? This course is recognised by industry, including the mining sector.

RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces
MSMPER202 Observe permit work

Course Overview

Working in confined spaces is a highly hazardous activity and is governed by various legislative instruments.

Confined spaces are commonly found in tanks, ducts, flues, chimneys, containers or other similar enclosed or partially enclosed structures. They pose dangers because they are usually not designed to be areas where people work. The hazards are not always obvious and may change with each entry into the confined space.

This course is based on this applicable State legislation to provide you with the skills and knowledge to safely work in confined spaces.

This course also covers the skills and knowledge required to undertake the safety observer role for permits requiring a safety observer. This role may also be called a hole watcher or a fire watcher. Safety observers can stop permit work, but do not have the authority to restart it.

Course Outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Plan and prepare for working in confined space
  • Work in confined space
  • Exit confined space
  • Control the permit site
  • Take appropriate action for potential incident
  • Complete safety observer role
  • Clean up

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a Statement of Attainment and plastic competency card to keep in your wallet.

Industry recommends this course is renewed every two years.

    Entry Requirements

All learners must be 16 years or older and will be required to provide photographic identification upon arriving for their course.

    • In South Australia a child of compulsory school age (between 6-16 years of age) cannot be employed during the hours that they are required to attend school or participate in an approved training program.
    • If you are under 16 years of age, you can still apply for Civil Train SA courses, but you will need to talk to your School’s principal to discuss your exemption. The principal will provide you with the appropriate exemption application form and tell you what evidence or documentation is required.

As part of your course enrolment at Civil Train there is a requirement that you complete a short online quiz. This will assist Civil Train to understand your current levels of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN), to ensure you are at the appropriate level to successfully complete your selected training course. This is a one-time quiz and results will be saved to your learner file and referred to for all future enrolments.

Please note: Civil Train only carries out assessments in English.  If English is your second language, you may engage a professional (accredited) and independent translator at your cost, for training purposes only.  However, you will be required to undertake the assessment in English without the aid of your translator.
