Course Overview

This course is designed for experienced operators who need to demonstrate and refine their skills in wheeled front end loader operations. It focuses on assessing and validating participants’ proficiency in planning, interpreting operations documentation, and implementing safety measures. Operators will be evaluated on their ability to perform prestart checks, operate the loader effectively, handle and place materials, and manage equipment relocation. The course also includes an assessment of housekeeping practices to ensure a safe and efficient work environment. In this course, experienced operators will showcase their expertise and ensure their skills meet industry standards.

Course Outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

Effective Planning and Preparation:

  • Accurately interpret front end loader operations documentation and work instructions.
  • Identify, assess, and manage hazards and environmental issues, implementing appropriate risk control measures.
  • Select and wear required PPE, follow traffic management signage, and adhere to emergency procedures.
  • Coordinate and communicate planned activities with site personnel prior to starting operations.

Skilled Loader Operation:

  • Perform prestart and start-up checks as per workplace procedures.
  • Identify and address faults or defects, and adjust operating techniques based on site conditions.
  • Operate the front end loader safely and efficiently, managing equipment performance using indicators and alarms.

Effective Material Handling:

  • Determine load weights to ensure they are within safe operational limits.
  • Use lifting gear correctly, position machinery effectively, and shift materials using hand, audible, and communication signals.
  • Perform material handling tasks safely and conduct post-operational inspections.

Safe Equipment Relocation:

  • Prepare and relocate the front end loader safely between work areas.
  • Assist with loading and unloading the machine onto trailers, following safety and traffic management guidelines.

Comprehensive Housekeeping:

  • Clear, dispose of, or recycle materials according to workplace procedures.
  • Manage and report hazards to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Complete and file or distribute all required documentation in line with workplace practices.

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a Statement of Attainment and Competency Card.

    Course Duration

    This course is once (1) day.

    Entry Requirements

    Participants must have prior experience operating a wheeled front end loader. Once enrolled:

    • A self-assessment checklist, provided by Civil Train, must be submitted to verify experience on the machine.
    • Completion of Plant Safety pre-reading and assessment questions, supplied by Civil Train, is required before attending the course.

    As part of your course enrolment at Civil Train there is a requirement that you complete a short online quiz. This will assist Civil Train to understand your current levels of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN), to ensure you are at the appropriate level to successfully complete your selected training course. This is a one-time quiz and results will be saved to your learner file and referred to for all future enrolments.

    Please note: Civil Train only carries out assessments in English.

    The applicant must be able to use the English language at a level that is appropriate for the safe use and operation of the particular class of equipment. As an example, the applicant must be able to read and comprehend hazard warning signs, load charts, data plates and any other safe operating requirement. The applicant must be able to communicate this information to the registered assessor.

    Delivery & Assessment

    This course is delivered face to face to experienced operators.

    There are theory and practical training and assessment components to the course that are online.
