Course Overview

Hazardous substances are those that, following worker exposure, can have an adverse effect on health. Examples of hazardous substances include poisons, substances that cause burns or skin and eye irritation, and substances that may cause cancer. Many hazardous substances are also classified as dangerous goods.

A substance is deemed to be a hazardous substance if it meets the classification criteria specified in the Approved Criteria for Classifying Hazardous Substances [NOHSC:1008(2004] (Approved Criteria).

Course Outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Recognise common hazardous substances
  • Use the Hazardous Substances Information System (HSIS)
  • Understand the hazards arising from hazardous substances and control measures
  • Understand record keeping procedures, including use of SDS
  • Conduct housekeeping activities

Upon completion, you will be issued with a Statement of Attendance.

    Course Duration

    This course is half day (3.5 hours) in duration.

    Entry Requirements

    All learners must be 16 years or older and will be required to provide photographic identification upon arriving for their course.

    • In South Australia a child of compulsory school age (between 6-16 years of age) cannot be employed during the hours that they are required to attend school or participate in an approved training program.
    • If you are under 16 years of age, you can still apply for Civil Train SA courses, but you will need to talk to your School’s principal to discuss your exemption. The principal will provide you with the appropriate exemption application form and tell you what evidence or documentation is required.

    Please note: Civil Train only carries out training in English.  If English is your second language, you may engage a professional (accredited) and independent translator at your cost, for training purposes only.  There is no assessment required for this course.

    Delivery & Assessment

    This course is non-accredited and delivered and assessed face to face.
