Course Overview

This course is appropriate for those who are using a non-slewing telescopic materials handler with a lifting capacity of less than 3 tonnes.

A telehandler is a self-propelled wheeled machine which has a hydraulically operated telescopic boom which can move vertically, horizontally, and on some models, rotate.

Course Outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Plan and prepare for operation
  • Conduct pre-operational checks
  • Operate the handler
  • Attach, secure, lift, carry and place materials and loads
  • Select, fit and remove attachments
  • Relocate the telescopic material handler
  • from one site to another
  • Conduct machine maintenance
  • Park and secure the telehandler

Upon successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment.

    Entry Requirements

    All learners must be 16 years or older and will be required to provide photographic identification upon arriving for their course.

    • In South Australia a child of compulsory school age (between 6-16 years of age) cannot be employed during the hours that they are required to attend school or participate in an approved training program.
    • If you are under 16 years of age, you can still apply for Civil Train SA courses, but you will need to talk to your School’s principal to discuss your exemption. The principle will provide you with the appropriate exemption application form and tell you what evidence or documentation is required.

    As part of your course enrolment at Civil Train there is a requirement that you complete a short online quiz. This will assist Civil Train to understand your current levels of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN), to ensure you are at the appropriate level to successfully complete your selected training course. This is a one-time quiz and results will be saved to your learner file and referred to for all future enrolments.

    Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills required for this course include:

    • locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
    • interpreting and applying environmental management plan
    • calculating volume and weights
    • maintaining equipment written records
    • complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures
    • communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
    • using load handling communication methods with all parties
    • using conventional hand and audible signals

    Please note: Civil Train only carries out assessments in English.  If English is your second language, you may engage a professional (accredited) and independent translator at your cost, for training purposes only.  However, you will be required to undertake the assessment in English without the aid of your translator.

    This course is delivered and assessed face to face.

    There are theory and practical training and assessment components to the course.
