Course Overview

White Card is a term used to describe the plastic card issued by a Registered Training Organisations indicating that a person has undertaken general induction training for construction work.

This is a course of training that provides basic knowledge of construction work, the Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws that apply, common hazards likely to be encountered in construction work and how the associated risks can be controlled.

Under WHS legislation, workers on construction sites in Australia must undertake general induction training or ‘White Card training’ and have evidence of their attendance from the course before they are permitted to commence work on a construction site.

Course Outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Identify health and safety legislative requirements of construction work
  • Identify construction hazards and risk control measures
  • Identify health and safety communication and reporting processes
  • Identify incident and emergency response procedures
  • If successful you will receive a Statement of Attainment and plastic White Card with your photograph

    Course Duration

    This course is one (1) day from 8am to 4pm.

    Entry Requirements

    All learners must be 16 years or older and will be required to provide photographic identification upcon arriving for their course.

    • In South Australia a child of compulsory school age (between 6-16 years of age) cannot be employed during the hours that they are required to attend school or participate in an approved training program.
    • If you are under 16 years of age, you can still apply for Civil Train SA courses, but you will need to talk to your School’s principal to discuss your exemption. The principle will provide you with the appropriate exemption application form and tell you what evidence or documentation is required.

    As part of your course enrolment at Civil Train there is a requirement that you complete a short online quiz. This will assist Civil Train to understand your current levels of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN), to ensure you are at the appropriate level to successfully complete your selected training course. This is a one-time quiz and results will be saved to your learner file and referred to for all future enrolments.

    Entrants will need a minimum level of language and literacy skills to enable them to do the following:

    Numeracy Skills to:

    • locate and recognise numbers commonly used in safety signs.

    Oral communication skills to:

    • ask questions to clarify instructions
    • listen to instructions to identify key safety information
    • tell another person about a construction problem or hazard

    Reading skills to:

    • follow simple pictorial safety instructions
    • follow simple safety instructions that are written in English

    Problem-solving skills to:

    • select risk control measures

    Please note: Civil Train only carries out assessments for White Card in English.  If English is your second language, you may engage a professional (accredited) and independent translator at your cost, for training purposes only.  However, you will be required to undertake the assessment in English without the aid of your translator.

    This course is delivered and assessed face to face.

    There are theory and practical training and assessment components to the course.

    Public courses are scheduled frequently in Alice Springs and Darwin.
    White Card can also be delivered regionally – please contact the NT office for more details.
    Civil Train NT can come to your worksite to deliver – please contact the relevant office for a quote.

    This course is not available at Civil Train WA.
